The MCC baseball team is in Florida for their annual spring trip to kick off the season. Follow along for updates and highlights as they become available.
March 8: Delgado 15, Monroe CC 2 - The Tribunes struggled in their opener as they fell to the third-ranked team in NJCAA Division I. Delgado banged out three home runs among its 13 hits. Angel Rosario finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for MCC. Ryan Prevost and Jimmy Latona added a hit and a run scored each.
March 8 - Gloucester 5, Monroe 3 - MCC closed to within a run and had the bases loaded in the seventh, but a pop-up ended the threat and the ballgame. Gloucester, the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division III, had only four hits on the game. Hunter Merrill drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single and a hit-by-pitch with the bases full. Tim Segrue and Connor Lewis added two hits each.
March 9 - Parkland 2, MCC 0: The Tribune bats were held in check all afternoon by the 14th-ranked (NJCAA Div. II) Cobras. MCC managed just three singles - one each by Jon Simmons, Connor Lewis, and Jimmy Latona.
March 9: Monroe 14, St. Lawrence (Canada) 4: The MCC bats awoke with 12 hits and 14 runs as the squad earned their first victory. Ellington Hopkins finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Rayshelon Carolina had two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs, and four stolen bases. Sjaghbar Martis scored four runs. Alex Saville and Aaron Endres had two hits each. Cameron Scalzo got the win, allowing one earned run and striking out seven over 3 innings.
March 10: Monroe 6, Gloucester 4 - Tommy LaCongo finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored an an RBI for MCC, which scored four times in the second inning to take an early lead. Ellington Hopkins and Rayshelon Carolina added RBI hits in the big inning. Blaine Farrell got the win in relief.
March 11: St. Cloud 1, Monroe 0 - MCC left two runners on base in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings in the shutout loss. Ellington Hopkins finished 2-for-2 at the plate. Angel Rosario, Brett Sanders, and Hunter Merrill had the other hits. Ryan Quackenbush pitched well in defeat, allowing a run on three hits over four innings.
March 11: St. Cloud 11, Monroe 5 - St. Cloud broke open the game with three runs in the third and six in the fourth. Mike DiStefano finished with two hits and two RBIs for MCC.
March 12: Heartland 4-1, Monroe 3-0 - The Tribunes managed just seven hits combined against the NJCAA Division II power Heartland CC. Sjaghbar Martis provided the pop in the opener for Monroe, connecting on a three-run homer. Nick DiBenedetto was the hard-luck loser in the nightcap, allowing a run on just four hits over five innings.
March 13: Monroe 3-6, Schenectady 1-3 - The Tribunes improved to 4-7 with the doubleheader sweep. Blaine Farrell tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed just one run to get the win in the opener. MCC scored all three of their runs in the second, with two coming home on a Brett Sanders base hit. David Lawrence pitched well in game two, allowing two unearned runs and striking out six over five innings. Connor Lewis clubbed a two-run home run and Hunter Merrill had a pair of hits.
March 14: Monroe 2-13, Brookdale 3-12: MCC rallied from an 8-1 deficit in game two to salvage a split of the doubleheader. The Tribunes banged out 14 hits on the game. Ellington Hopkins was 2-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs, and Tommy LaCongo and Connor Lewis drove in two runs apiece. Sjaghbar Martis, LaCongo, Brett Sanders, and Hunter Merrill all had two hits. Ryan Quackenbush pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win. Hopkins had two hits and an RBI in game one.
