HENRIETTA, N.Y. - Monroe Community College Baseball let a pair of early leads slip away as the host Tribunes dropped a doubleheader (1-2/2-7) to Herkimer College, Tuesday afternoon at Tribune Field.
Alex Simons (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) plated CJ Phelps (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) with a one-out single in the bottom of the second to give MCC the lead in Game 1.
But the Tribunes did not manage another hit for the remainder of the contest.
Aaron Rutherford (London, ON/London Southern Collegiate Institute) opened with two shutout innings. The right-hander worked around a leadoff walk in the first and faced the minimum in the second.
Ryan Stewart (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn High) allowed one run on two hits and three walks over three innings. Patrick Sherron (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) surrendered a run on two hits and a walk over two frames of work out of the bullpen.
Patrick May (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and Connor Sackett (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport High) had a hit apiece.
Monroe took advantage of four walks in the first inning of Game 2 to grab an early lead. Lucas Brown (Toronto, ON/Humberside Collegiate Institute) crossed home when Joe Grzeskowiak (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) worked a bases-loaded free pass for an RBI.
Grzeskowiak plated Dylan Wanat with a two-out single in the third for a 2-1 Tribune edge. MCC had one hit for the remainder of the nightcap and were set down in order from the fifth through the seventh innings.
Braden Pumputis (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over the first two innings of work.
Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors) doubled and walked in the game.
Phelps had a single.
Monroe CC (9-10) played without starting shortstop Tobey Wright (Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) who suffered an injury over the past weekend.
The Tribunes committed one error in Tuesday's twin bill. The black and gold had won six of seven entering the day's action. They have made three fielding miscues in the past nine games.
