Second-half surge leads Monroe past Mohawk Valley
The Tribunes hand the Hawks their first loss of the season.
ROCHESTER - The MCC women's basketball team broke open a tight game at the half and pulled away for a 66-48 victory over Mohawk Valley Community College Thursday evening.
The win was the 14th straight for the Lady Tribunes, who are now 15-4. Mohawk Valley, the second-ranked team in NJCAA Division III, dropped its first contest and is now 16-1.
Monroe led 29-26 at the break before going on an 18-0 run that spanned almost eight minutes and put them up 47-28. Sydni Lester (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) directed the run, scoring four points and dishing out four assists to help MCC take control.
The Tribune defense put together another strong effort, holding the Hawks to 25 percent from the floor and forcing 24 turnovers.
Karin Robinson (Queens, NY/Mary Louis Academy) led Monroe with 15 points. Dionne Coe (Brooklyn, NY/Murry Bergtraum) and Tyese Purvis (Queens, NY/Francis Lewis) added 11 apiece.
Lester finished with 10 points and six assists, and Tyra Jones (Rochester, NY/East) added a double-double with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks.
