Lady Tribs Pull Out Late Win Against Bobcats
MCC women's basketball takes care of business against Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse, 76-69. Henderson and crew brought the firepower in a quick response to their loss at Sullivan.
ROCHESTER, NY - MCC's women's basketball team rebounded from their previous loss to Sullivan with a close win against the Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse Bobcats, 76-69.
Despite shooting just 38.2% for the game, the Tribunes' offense showed resilience by taking 68 shots and converting 26, allowing them to keep up the scoring. Their defense was pivotal, holding the Bobcats to a dismal 9.1% from three-point range and winning the rebounding battle 44-35. This defensive intensity allowed Monroe to dictate the pace, even with fluctuating shooting percentages, and they stayed competitive by focusing on ball movement and second-chance opportunities.
The game began with a hot first quarter for Monroe, shooting an impressive 61.1% from the field. Serenity Henderson (La Verne, CA) was a key offensive force, scoring 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting, including two three-pointers, and Skylah Kemp (Long Island, NY) contributed 8 points with efficient shooting as well. Gaby Lopez (Rochester, NY) added three assists, helping Monroe's offense flow smoothly with 8 total assists for the quarter. While turnovers (7) and limited rebounding (6 total boards) were concerns, the team's sharp shooting allowed them to establish an early lead and confidence on the court.
In the second half, Monroe faced challenges but managed to maintain their presence. The third quarter showed balanced contributions, with Henderson scoring 8 points, including two three-pointers, and Kemp adding 7 points, with strong free-throw shooting (5-for-6). Their shooting was solid at 38.9% for the quarter, and they stayed aggressive on the boards with 14 total rebounds, including six offensive rebounds that helped extend possessions. The fourth quarter proved difficult as Monroe's shooting dropped to 23.5% from the field, despite Kemp's hustle on the boards with nine total rebounds in the period and Lopez's team-leading five points. Though turnovers and shooting inefficiency stymied their comeback efforts, the team's defensive effort—totaling six steals—showed their persistence until the final buzzer.
