Tribune volleyball continues to roll

CANANDAIGUA, NY - The MCC volleyball team continued its strong start to the 2014 season, sweeping three matches as part of a Region III Pod tournament at Finger Lakes Community College Saturday.

The eighth-ranked Tribunes (4-0 Region III, 9-0 overall) defeated Hudson Valley, No. 7 SUNY Adirondack, and Columbia-Greene to stay unbeaten.

Montana Vescovi had a big day for Monroe. The freshman setter totaled 105 assists to go along with 11 digs to help MCC continue its perfect start.

The Tribunes opened up by defeating Hudson Valley 25-12, 25-12, 25-8. The team had 36 kills on the match, led by seven from Dayle Taber. Emily Butler, Rose Ayala, and Candice Greer all added six apiece. Jessica Jenkins chipped in with 10 digs to go along with three aces.

Monroe then went the distance with Adirondack in a matchup of NJCAA Division III Top-10 teams. The Tribunes took the first two sets, 25-18, 25-21, and led 20-15 in the third set, but the Timberwolves rallied to win 29-27. Adirondack took the fourth set 25-22, but the Tribunes rallied to win the deciding match 15-11.

Vescovi had a huge match, finishing with 54 assists to go along with six kills, six digs, and two blocks. Taber also came up big with 22 kills and 11 digs, while Rose Ayala added 10 kills, 10 digs, and six blocks.

Chelsey Luce also contributed 10 kills, and Jenkins recorded an incredible 29 digs.

Monroe wrapped up the day with a resounding, 25-4, 25-11, 25-13 win against Columbia-Greene. Greer led the way with four kills and four aces, while Butler and Sarah Graham added three kills apiece. Vescovi dished out 18 assists.
