Tribunes fall in finals of OCC Tourney

Northampton hands Monroe its first loss.

SYRACUSE - Monroe Community College and Northampton Community College entered this weekend's Cara Bryant Memorial Volleyball Tournament at Onondaga CC as the last two undefeated teams in NJCAA Division III.

Both teams are going home with one defeat, but it was the Spartans who won the tournament.

Northampton defeated Monroe 23-25, 25-10, 15-10 in the final just hours after the Tribunes had knocked NCC from the ranks of the unbeaten in pool play. MCC is now 29-1 on the season.

Monroe reached the finals by dispatching Cayuga CC in the quarterfinals (25-22, 25-7) and Jefferson CC in the semifinals (25-12, 25-14). Rose Ayala and Chelsey Luce had eight kills each against Cayuga, while Dayle Taber had 12 kills and Montana Vescovi added 21 assists against Jefferson.

The Tribunes opened pool play with a pair of victories Friday. MCC first defeated Finger Lakes CC 25-22, 25-11. Vescovi had 22 assists, Taber tallied seven kills, and Jessica Jenkins added 10 digs.

Monroe was then pushed to the limit against Jefferson CC before holding off the Cannoneers 25-16, 21-25, 15-13. Taber (13 kills and 10 digs) and Ayala (10 kills and 10 digs) each finished with a double-double, while Vescovi handed out 30 assists.

Pool play continued Saturday, and MCC started things off by defeating Cayuga CC 25-15, 25-14 behind seven kills from Luce.

Monroe then took on Northampton to wrap up pool play. The Tribunes prevailed 25-22, 25-19.
