NORTH EAST, Pennsylvania - The MCC volleyball team defeated Genesee Community College in straight sets Saturday to capture the Western New York Athletic Conference tournament championship.
The Tribunes topped the Cougars 25-16, 25-20 to claim the title. It's the second WNYAC championship for MCC, which also won in 2012. The team is now 36-1 on the season and is the top seed in next weekend's Region III, Division III tournament at Niagara County Community College.
Monroe went 2-0 in pool play. The Tribs fought off a tough Mercyhurst NE squad 25-15, 22-25, 18-16 to start pool play before dispatching Niagara CCC 25-20, 25-20 to advance to the finals.
Rose Ayala finished with 25 kills on the day to pace the MCC attack. Chelsey Luce added 22 kills and Dayle Taber chipped in with 20.
Jessica Jenkins totaled 40 digs and Montana Vescovi had 73 assists.
