MCC claims WNYAC championship

ROCHESTER - The MCC volleyball team defeated Genesee Community College in straight sets to claim the 2015 Western New York Athletic Conference championship Saturday afternoon.

The win capped another perfect day for the Tribunes (38-1), who now move on to the Region III, Division III tournament next weekend at Niagara County Community College. Monroe is the top seed at regionals.

MCC topped Genesee 25-23, 25-19 in an exciting championship match that featured a number of momentum swings. The Tribunes trailed 19-13 in the first set and were behind early in set two before rallying in each.

Dayle Taber had eight kills and 10 digs against the Cougars and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Rose Ayala also had eight kills, and Rachael Nicholls added 11 digs.

Monroe reached the finals by winning both of its pool play matches. The Tribunes knocked off Erie CC 25-14, 25-14 before battling back to defeat Mercyhurst North East 22-25, 25-19, 15-7.

Candice Greer paced MCC against Erie by finishing with 10 kills and three blocks. Chelsey Luce added seven kills and Montana Vescovi handed out 24 assists.

Mercyhurst took set one before Monroe rallied to take the next two and complete pool play unbeaten. Ayala tallied nine kills and 10 digs, while Taber added eight kills and 11 digs.  Greer was strong at the net with four kills and seven blocks and Vescovi chipped in with 29 assists and 13 digs.
